Torsion Apparatus

This torsion apparatus is intended for studying static and dynamic torsion as well as the limit of elasticity of wires. The apparatus consists of a fixed clamping device for test wires and a rotatable protractor disc with a clamp. The horizontal assembly is used for static measurements and for determining the limit of elasticity, the vertical assembly for dynamic torsion measurements. A preset torsion is compensated for by a counter-torque during static measurements. When the limit of elasticity has been exceeded, permanent deformation of the wire is the outcome. The apparatus is used as a rotating pendulum during dynamic torsion measurements (vertical assembly). In order to vary the moment of inertia, the protractor disc can be loaded with additional weights. By determining the oscillation period, the dynamic torsion properties of the tested material can be ascertained.
